[문화재청](국영문 동시 배포) 국립고궁박물관의 3월 큐레이터 추천 왕실 유물은 <요지연도>

  문화재청 국립고궁박물관(관장 김동영)은 지난 1월 19일 재개관을 기점으로 상설전시실 지하층 ’궁중서화실‘에서 전시하고 있는 <요지연도>를 3월의 ’큐레이터 추천 왕실 유물‘로 정해 5일부터 온라인(유튜브)으로도 소개한다.

   조선 후기 궁중을 중심으로 유행하였던 <요지연도>는 중국 고대 전설 속 서왕모(西王母)가 신선들의 땅인 곤륜산(崑崙山)의 연못인 요지(瑤池)에 주나라 목왕(穆王)을 초대해 연회를 베푸는 모습을 그린 그림이다. 이러한 <요지연도>는 미국의 소장자가 부친이 50여 년 전 주한미군으로 근무할 당시 구매하여 미국에 가져갔던 것으로, 문화재청이 환수 사업을 통해 지난해 고국으로 들여와 국립고궁박물관에서 전시 중인 작품으로, 환수 유물에 대한 의미를 상기시키고자 3월의 큐레이터 추천 왕실 유물로 선정되었다.

  <요지연도>는 불로장생(不老長生)의 도교적 주제를 담은 신선도로 국가·왕조가 오랜 번영을 염원하는 뜻이 담긴 그림이다. 대부분의 요지연도는 서왕모와 목왕 앞에 잔치상(찬탁, 饌卓)이 놓여 있는데, 국립고궁박물관 소장 <요지연도>는 여러 악기를 연주하는 인물(시녀)을 배치하여 연회의 분위기를 더욱 생동감 있게 한 점이 특징이다. 잔치에 나오는 주인공 주변에는 영생을 누리는 복숭아 ‘반도(蟠桃)’가 곳곳에 그려져 있고, 병풍 왼쪽에는 잔치로 향하는 각양각색의 신선들이 묘사되어 있다. 요지연도의 크기는 가로 5ｍ에 이르는 큰 병풍으로, 조선 후기 왕실 병풍의 위용을 느낄 수 있다.

  참고로, 국립고궁박물관 궁중서화실에서는 요지연도를 포함하여 4점의 병풍 유물이 전시되어 있으며, 이를 세부적으로 감상하고 기념할 수 있도록 홍보물도 제작하여 비치하였으며 이 홍보물은 누구나 소장할 수 있다.

？A Cultural Treasure Back in Korea after 50 Years to Be Presented on YouTube / Starting March 5 ？

The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director: Kim Dong-Young), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea, has been exhibiting the Folding Screen of the Banquet of Xiwangmu, Queen Mother of the West since reopening on January 19. On display in the permanent galleryPainting and Calligraphy of the Joseon Royal Court located on the lower floor of the museum, the folding screen is a superb example of a type of art that was popular in the late-Joseon royal court. The screen has been selected as the “Curator’s Choice from the Royal Treasures” for the month of March and will be presented in a video broadcast over the internet (via YouTube).

The Banquet of Xiwangmu illustrates the ancient Chinese legend of a feast hosted by Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, for King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty. It takes place in the land of the immortals, the Turquoise Pond in the Kunlun Mountains. The version presented as this month’s Curator’s Choice had been housed in a private collection in the U.S. after the collector’s father acquired the work fifty years ago while an active-duty service member stationed in Korea. Brought back to Korea through a Cultural Heritage Administration project aimed at the restitution of cultural properties, the screen has been selected as the Curator’s Choice for March in order to remind the public of the value of returned relics.

The Banquet of Xiwangmu is a painting of immortal beings that features Daoist themes of eternal youth and immortality and embodies wishes for lasting prosperity for the state and the dynasty. In most paintings on this theme, the Queen Mother of the West and King Mu are seated behind a table set with a feast. However, this version instead presents people (female attendants) playing various musical instruments, highlighting the festive ambience of the banquet. The main figure is surrounded by a spray of peaches of immortality, and to the left of the screen is a number of immortals heading to the banquet. This large example more than five meters wide exhibits the dignity of the folding screens of the late-Joseon royal court.

Promotional materials with more detailed information on the four folding screens currently on display in the gallery of Painting and Calligraphy of the Joseon Royal Court, including The Banquet of Xiwangmu, are available to visitors free of charge. The exhibition of these screens can also be enjoyed virtually through a video with English subtitles available on the museum website (gogung.go.kr) and on the YouTube channels of the museum and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea.
