[국가유산청](국영문 동시배포) 「반구천의 암각화」 유네스코 세계유산 등재

「반구천의 암각화(Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream)」가 유네스코 세계유산에 등재되었다. 지난 7월 6일부터 프랑스 파리에서 개최되고 있는 제47차 세계유산위원회(7.6.~7.16.)는 현지 시간으로 7월 12일 오전 「반구천의 암각화」를 세계유산 목록에 등재하기로 최종 결정했다.

「반구천의 암각화」는 2010년 세계유산 잠정목록에 등재된 이후 15년 만에 결실을 맺었고, 이로써 대한민국은 총 17건의 유네스코 세계유산(문화유산 15건, 자연유산 2건)을 보유하게 되었다.

이번에 세계유산으로 등재된 「반구천의 암각화」는 국보 「울주 대곡리 반구대 암각화」와 「울주 천전리 명문과 암각화」를 포함하는 단일 유산이다. 세계유산위원회는 「반구천의 암각화」에 대해 ▲ 탁월한 관찰력을 바탕으로 그려진 사실적인 그림과 독특한 구도는 한반도에 살았던 사람들의 예술성을 보여주고, 다양한 고래와 고래잡이의 주요단계를 담은 희소한 주제를 선사인들의 창의성으로 풀어낸 걸작이며, ▲ 선사시대부터 약 6천 년에 걸쳐 지속된 암각화의 전통을 증명하는 독보적인 증거이면서 한반도 동남부 연안 지역 사람들의 문화 발전을 집약하여 보여준다고 평가하였다.

한편, 세계유산위원회는 등재 결정과 함께, ▲ 사연댐 공사의 진척 사항을 세계유산센터에 보고할 것, ▲ 반구천세계암각화센터의 효과적 운영을 보장할 것, ▲ 관리 체계에서 지역 공동체와 주민들의 역할을 공식화할 것, ▲ 유산의 '탁월한 보편적 가치'(Outstanding Universal Value, OUV)에 영향을 줄 수 있는 모든 주요 개발계획에 대해 세계유산센터에 알릴 것을 권고하였다.

이번 「반구천의 암각화」의 세계유산 등재는 국가유산청과 외교부, 주유네스코대한민국대표부, 해당 지자체가 모두 힘을 합쳐 이뤄낸 값진 결과이다.

국가유산청은 이번 등재를 계기로 「반구천의 암각화」가 가진 세계유산으로서의 가치를 충실히 보존하는 한편, 지자체, 지역주민과의 긴밀한 협력을 이어가는 적극행정으로 지역사회와의 상생을 위한 정책적 노력을 지속할 계획이다.

The Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream has been successfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, which has been held in Paris, France from July 6 to 16, 2025, made the final decision to inscribe the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream on the World Heritage List on July 12.

Following its inscription on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in 2010, the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream has finally come to fruition after 15 years. With this inscription, the Republic of Korea now holds a total of 17 UNESCO World Heritage properties including 15 cultural and 2 natural sites.

The newly inscribed Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream is a single World Heritage property that includes the National Treasures of 'Daegok-ri Petroglyphs' and 'Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs' located in Ulju District, Ulsan Metropolitan City. The World Heritage Committee acknowledged the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream to be a masterpiece of human creative genius, which displays a wide range of images executed with great artistic mastery by the coastal inhabitants in the Korean Peninsula. The acute sense of observation reflected in the realistic depictions of various motifs and their specific compositions demonstrate the exceptional aesthetic sense of these artists. Their creativity is particularly evocative in prehistoric images depicting whales and certain stages of whaling, a subject only rarely represented in rock art around the world. The Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream also attest to a tradition of rock carving that was practiced for approximately 6,000 years within the landscape formed by the Bangucheon Stream. These rock carvings are exceptional because they demonstrate a complex form of artistic expression and concisely illustrate the cultural evolution of the coastal inhabitants of the peninsula over this long period.

Meanwhile, along with the inscription decisions, the World Heritage Committee recommended that the State Party:
a) Inform the World Heritage Center of the progress of the Sayeon Dam works,
b) Ensure the effective operationalization of the Bangucheon Petroglyphs World Heritage Center,
c) Formalize the role of local communities and residents in the management system,
d) Inform the World Heritage Center of the intention to undertake or authorize all major projects which may affect the Outstanding Universal Value of the property.

The inscription of the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream as a World Heritage Site was achieved through collaborative efforts involving the Korea Heritage Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Korea to UNESCO and local governments
The Korea Heritage Service will take this inscription as an opportunity to preserve the value of the Petroglyphs along the Bangucheon Stream as a World Heritage property, while continuing its policy efforts to promote coexistence with the local community.
