IRGC Says It Dismantled Terrorist Cell In Southeastern Iran
On May 24, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that it dismantled a terrorist cell during an operation in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan in cooperation with intelligence services.
In a statement, the guards said that two terrorists were killed and a third was captured during the operation. Loads of weapons and ammunition were also seized.
The IRGC didn’t provide any additional information about the counter-terrorism operation, or clarify the allegiance of the targeted cell.
The operation came just three days after five Iranian border guards were killed in a clash with terrorists in the town of Saravan on Sistan and Baluchestan’s border with Pakistan. Two of the victims were officers.
After the attack, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that the perpetrators will meet a “decisive response”. From its side, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, called on the Pakistani government to “implement the agreements between the two countries to eliminate terrorist groups as soon as possible, and to improve the security of the common borders.”
Iranian security forces in Sistan and Baluchistan clashed with terrorist groups and drug traffickers on several occasions the last few years. The presence of the IRGC helps keep the situation in the province under control.
