Six Syrian Service Members Killed Or Wounded In New Wave Of Attacks In…
Six Syrian service members were reportedly killed or wounded in three separate attacks in the southern governorate of Daraa.
On July 10, unidentified militants opened fire at two officers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the town of al-Sanamayn in the northern Daraa countryside. One of the officers was killed on the spot, while the other was wounded.
The next day, July 11, a patrol was hit by a roadside bomb between the towns of Saida and Western Ghariyah in the eastern countryside of Daraa. An SAA soldier was killed and two security officers were wounded as a result of the bombing.
Later, a warrant officer of the General Intelligence Directorate was assassinated by unidentified militants in the town of Nawa in the western Daraa countryside.
No side has claimed responsibility for any of the three attacks. However, it is most likely that the attacks were carried out by ISIS or one of the other terrorist groups which are known to be active in Daraa, like al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.
The attacks came amid high tensions in the town of Tafas, where government forces launched an operation against cells affiliated with ISIS a week earlier. The operation was put on halt at the request of a local tribe who offered to solve the issue without bloodshed. However, the militants taking shelter in the town are yet to surrender or leave.
Overall, the situation in Daraa remains unstable. ISIS and several other terrorist groups are still active in the governorate, where criminal activities are also on the rise.
