The Hellenic Navy has taken delivery of the first two of four ex-US Coast Guard (USCG) Island-class cutters.

The two vessels, ex- Adak (WPB 1333) and ex- Aquidneck (WPB 1309), were towed to Salamis Naval Base on 4 July following their arrival at Piraeus port the previous day on board the heavy-lift ship M/V SLNC Magothy . The cargo ship transported the ships from Manama, Bahrain, where it set sail on 16 June bound for Greece.

The ships will now undergo a refit and a partial upgrade, which will include the installation of a Leonardo Lionfish 20 mm remote weapon station (RWS), 12.7 mm machine guns, a new surveillance radar, a Miltech Hellas electro-optical sensor, and new communications equipment.

The two remaining vessels, ex- Wrangell (WPB 1332) and ex- Monomoy (WPB 1326), are scheduled to arrive in Greece in the coming weeks, the Hellenic Navy said.

They will be renamed Mantouvalos (P 197), Galanis (P 198), Liaskos ( P 288), and Yalopsos (P 289), although it has not yet been decided which ship will have which name.
