On July 27, the United States-led coalition announced that one of its helicopters crashed while attempting an emergency landing during a training mission in northern Iraq.

The helicopter reportedly crashed in the Makhmour area, about 60 kilometers to the southwest of the Kurdish capital of Erbil.

In a statement, a spokesman for the coalition said the helicopter experienced “an in-flight mishap”, while conducting a routine training mission near the city.

“There were no coalition casualties nor damage to Coalition or civilian infrastructure,” the spokesman said, adding that “ the coalition aircraft was damaged.”

The spokesman noted that coalition service members worked with Iraqi authorities to secure the site and ensure safety for the civilian populace. An assessment of the situation is ongoing, he concluded.

This was the second helicopter of the U.S.-led coalition to crash this year. On June 11, at least 22 American service members were wounded when a coalition helicopter crashed in northeastern Syria. Later it was reported that the troops were part of the highly secretive Delta Force commando unit.

The U.S.-led coalition operates against ISIS in Iraq under an agreement with the government. Still, many sides in the country oppose the coalition’s presence. Meanwhile in Syria, coalition operations are not sanctioned by the country’s government.
