The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that on the night of August 1, Ukraine had attempted to attack Russian civilian cargo vessels en route to the Bosphorus Strait in the southwestern part of the Black Sea. The Ukrainian military used tree unmanned boats for the attack.

The attack failed. The boats were destroyed by Russian military ships that were patrolling the navigation in tha area.

“All the boats were detected and destroyed in a timely manner by the ships of the Russian Navy accompanying the sea transport,” the Defense Ministry reported.

Earlier on the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the patrol ships of the Black Sea Fleet “Sergey Kotov” and “Vasily Bykov” thwarted the Ukrainian attack and destroyed three boats 340 kilometers southwest of Sevastopol.  The ships were not damaged and they continue to perform their tasks.

According to open sources, the US MQ-9A Reaper UAV, which took off from the Kympiya-Turziy airbase, was operating east of the coast of Bulgaria at the time of the attack. Highly likely the US military guided the unmanned boats. Later the RQ-4D Phoenix UAV was spotted in the area. On July 31, a Portuguese Takeover A5 UAV was operating in the area of the Zmeiny island and it could also be used to escort the boats. The increased activities of foreign UAVs in the area may indicated that Ukrainian unmanned boats were launched from the ports located on the banks of the Danube River.

This is the second attack on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet in the same area in a week. On the night of July 25, the Russian Ministry of Defence declared that two unmanned boats targeted the ship Sergey Kotov when it was patrolling shipping in the southwestern part of the Black Sea. LINK

In early June, six boats targeted Russian Priazovie ship which was ensuring security in the area of the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream gas pipelines. LINK A similar attack took place in May, when the ship Ivan Khurs was targeted by three boats. LINK So far, all Ukrainian attacks failed and resulted in destruction of the boats.

In response to the second attack on the Crimean Bridge on July 17, Russian forces launched retaliation strikes, destroying Ukrainian military facilities used for production and storage of unmanned boats of the Ukrainian Navy and its foreign partners. Most of the targets were located in the ports of the Odessa region. However, Russian missiles also reached the ports on the Danube River. Kiev’s unsuccessful attempts to reach Russian ships in the Black Sea may lead to a new wave of retaliation strikes on Ukrainian military facilities.
