On August 6, video footage showing recent Russian airstrikes on the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib surfaced online.
The airstrikes, which took place on August 5 morning, wiped out a headquarters of al-Qaeada-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham in the western outskirts of Idlib city. The terrorist group is the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. Casualties were reported after the airstrikes. However, the details are still unclear.
Earlier this week, the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria revealed information about a plot to launch suicide attacks against the Russian military group in the country and said that the group’s command is ready to take deceive action in response to an increase in attempts to launch drones from Greater Idlib.
HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib increased attacks against nearby government-held villages and towns in recent months in a violation of a ceasefire that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago. Many of the attacks led to civilian casualties.
The last wave of Russian airstrikes was likely carried out to deter HTS and its allies in order to reinforce the ceasefire in Greater Idlib.
The escalation in the region appears to be an attempt to sabotage the Turkish-Syrian normalization process which is sponsored by both Russia and Iran.
